Over lossy ground, the incoming wave tilts significantly, and induces more voltage into the wire. Harold Beverage got lucky when he first tried the idea on Mount Desert Island, in Maine.

I used to live on a Connecticut hill, with granite about 3 feet below the surface. Great place for Beverages in the woods. Unfortunately, the deer thought it was good sport to not duck under them, so they never lasted more than a couple of days.
