I found the answer in a comment on YT. "if you're in the states the am band needs to have stepping at 10 kilohertz , if your radio is set to 9, with the unit turned off press and hold the M - and lock button at the the same time for 3 seconds, you will see a 9 on the display hit the up button till it goes to 10 and you're ready to rock and roll".
