Sony ICF-SW7600GR Mega-Sensitivity Boost
Hello All,
Last summer, prompted by the need to pack an extremely compact but
sensitive SSB spotting receiver for Ultralight DU chasing, I replaced the stock
4.75" x .35" loopstick on a Sony ICF-SW7600GR with an Amidon 7.5" ferrite
bar, wound with 40/44 Litz wire to match the two stock coil inductances. The
result was a huge sensitivity boost with no apparent ill effects, making this
compact model superior in weak-signal capability to even a stock
ICF-2010.
Unfortunately, due to multiple hobby and other commitments, there
hasn't yet been time to write a formal article detailing this procedure,
although it is quite within the capability of the average hobbyist. Prompted by
repeated requests from some DXers in Europe, I have been able to write a
summarized version, which would be suitable for a technically experienced person
to perform the transplant. There are also several photos available on request,
showing the new loopstick coil arrangement and mounting system. Interested DXers
can receive any or all of these files upon request.
