Strange Band Behaviour

Paul Blundell

Over the long weekend, I have noticed some strange behaviour of the HPON station on 1593kHz. During one of my long term DX project sessions I was tuning past this station and thought I had scrolled too far (to our local 1611kHz sports station) as the signal was so strong. Below is a break down of some stations at both ends of the band that are all 5kw and around the same distance (I have included the 50kw station for reference).

531kHz (3GG) = 384km - 5kw (3,3,4,4,5,3) 22
594kHz (3WV)= 679km - 50kw (4,4,5,5,5,4) 27
1503kHz (3KND) = 445km - 5kw (1,2,1,3,3,2) 12
1566kHz (3NE) = 572km - 5kw (2,2,3,3,4,3) 17
1593kHz (HPON) = 459km - 5kw (4,4,4,5,5,3) 25

What I am seeing is that this station is performing at a level which is much beyond what I would expect. I normally expect that the stations at the lower end of the band will put out a better signal and normally be received "better", when compared to stations at the top end of the band which are the same distance away and transmitting the same power level.
