Anyone figured out if there is a hidden option to keep the backlight
on at all times? I was hoping that it would if the unit was plugged
in, but alas (I also confirmed that there is no data seen on the USB
wire ... darn. :)

Pushing and holding the "FM ST." / "AM BW" button with the unit off
does a display test, so I was hoping someone had found a similar key
combo that latched the light.
